“An impressive collection of some of the world’s greatest discoveries and most exciting research”

For a century, National Geographic has participated in and chronicled many of the world’s greatest explorations - unlocking the secrets of the oceans, lifting men into the stratosphere, and mapping the very boundaries of the earth, sea and sky.

Now you can relive some of the most significant expeditions in history. This DVD looks at the history of the National Geographic Society, from its first magazine in 1888, to some of the world’s most amazing discoveries and explorations.
The Society sponsored and introduced various new technologies in its quest to discover and explore. Its influence on the exploration of earth and all there’s in it has been enormous.

Some of the highlights from this documentary include:

  • The world’s first wildlife photos taken with flash at night (1906)
  • Journey to the North Pole by Robert E. Peary in 1909
  • Expeditions led by Hiram Bingham to excavate Machu Picchu, the lost mountaintop city of the Inca in the Peruvian Andes
  • The botanist Joseph Rock’s discovery of the tiny kingdom of Muli in the Tibetan mountains
  • Howard Carter and his discovery of Tutankhamen’s burial chamber in Egypt
  • Excavations of the giant stone heads of the ancient Olmec culture in Mexico by Matthew Stirling
  • Publication of many of Jacques-Yves Cousteau’s undersea articles and photos
  • Climb Mount Everest on the first American ascent with Edmund Hillary – the first moving pictures from the summit of Everest
  • Discovery of the world’s oldest shipwreck
  • The first film footage taken under the polar ice cap
  • Jane Goodall and her pioneering work with chimpanzees
  • Study of the mountain gorillas in Rwanda by Dian Fossey.

The exploration continues unabated and the Society’s work is at the forefront of many new discoveries across the world today. Marvel at 100 years of exploration in the Society’s official centennial presentation.
