“The Bible is one of the oldest written works to describe wildlife – this unique film explores the animals of the Bible and the conservation efforts that are being made to preserve them”

Animals are a formidable presence in the Bible and the Old Testament makes reference to more than a hundred species, many with names unfamiliar to us. Some of these animals are featured in this documentary, together with some of the landscapes mentioned in the Bible, such as the wilderness and oasis of Engedi, where David hid from Saul.

The fleet-footed Nubian Ibex (the wild goat of the Bible), has been all but hunted out of existence.
The Arabian Oryx (unicorn) is relatively rare, as are Persian Fallow Deer (the roe in the Song of Solomon).
Ostriches once common to the deserts of the Middle East have vanished completely, and the Griffin Vulture is in danger of following soon.
Other biblical animals featured in this documentary include the Wolf, Quail, Wild Boar, Wild Ass, Stork, Crane, Pelican, and the Hyrax (the Bible calls it the Coney: “The conies are but a feeble folk, yet make they their houses in the rocks”, Proverbs 30:26).

Many of those creatures are gone from the Holy Land today, or on the verge of extinction. A few that disappeared from the wilds of the Holy Land have been restored there, as the result of tireless dedication by both Israeli and Arab conservationists. They are struggling to prevent any further wildlife extinctions and this documentary explores their remarkable efforts.

Dr Yossi Leshem is an internationally-known Israeli ornithologist. For many years he has been involved in the study of migratory bird habits in relation to aircraft safety. Known as ‘The Man Who Flies with Birds’, he has become an authority on tracking birds and improving flight safety for the jets of the Israeli Air Force, by sharply reducing air collisions.

Other inventive programs by Israeli and Arab conservationists are underway to stabilize and restore endangered animal populations.
Some nations in the historic Holy Land are beginning to develop another kind of ark: an extensive system of over 150 nature reserves, where threatened species can be protected from the flood of humanity. Like Noah’s Ark of yore, these shelters may yet deliver survivors from the storm.
