“Examine the myths and the natural history of this cunning, remarkably adaptable and successful wild dog”

The Jackal: revered god, legendary hunter and loving parent. Throughout history, Jackals have inspired both fear and awe in man. Hated and revered for thousands of years, the legendary Jackal thrives despite human encroachment and persecution.
They are remarkable hunters, as well as scavengers, and can hunt in a pack, or attack their prey alone. Their diet is very diverse and varies from beetles and mice to wildebeest calves and scraps of larger kills, scavenged off lions.

Their territory stretches across Europe, the Middle East, Asia and Africa, and in each territory, stories, myths and rumour have followed.
Their opportunist and cunning nature has fostered hatred and admiration in equal measure, which is encapsulated in the Jackal's most famous legend: Anubis, the god of Egypt, Lord of the Underworld. He ushered souls from one world to the next - a sinister figure, who was nevertheless regarded as a compassionate guide to the spirits of the deceased.

Even now, Jackals evoke tales of animosity and admiration as they thrive against the odds, often by outsmarting most other wild animals.
Successful for thousands of years, discover why these skilled and adaptable dogs achieved such legendary status and find out how they have managed to survive and thrive.

This beautifully filmed documentary follows a family of African Black-backed Jackals (Canis mesomelas), a member of the canine family, but also briefly shows Jackals in Israel and the Golden Jackal in India. The pair bond for life and produce a litter of pups in an underground den.

Jackals are very agile hunters and possess excellent smell, vision and hearing. Their main means of communication is their body language. Whilst the Jackal is very tolerant of its neighbours, other creatures around it can give the Jackal a hard time - its main threats are lions, cheetahs, leopards, dogs, farmers and trophy hunters.

This DVD is accompanied by a beautifully illustrated 24-page hardback reference book. Watch the close-up wildlife film and at the same time read the book to learn about habitats, diet, life cycle and more. The book is packed with intriguing facts, illustrations, photography and a 'Test your knowledge' quiz.
