“Why is quicksand easy to sink into but hard to escape from?”

National Geographic explores an often inescapable nightmare of nature that’s much more common than most of us realise: the killer mud called quicksand.

Question:      True or False: a person can disappear entirely in quicksand.
Answer:      False.  Quicksand is twice as dense as water, so humans will only sink chest deep. It is virtually impossible to disappear in quicksand.

Question:      Which of the following quicksand facts is FALSE?
(a) the finer the sand particles, the tighter and more vice-like the grip
(b) if you step in quicksand, pulling your foot straight up is the easiest way to escape quicksand
(c) earthquakes can generate quicksand
(d) quicksand can be found anywhere sand and water exist
(e) quicksand can have enough pressure to cause loss of circulation in limbs and may even crush bones

Answer:     (b)  pulling your foot straight up will only compact the sand. If you get a foot caught in quicksand, the best action is to slowly wiggle the foot loose.

Quicksand lies in wait 24 hours a day. This documentary uses eyewitness accounts to explain a natural phenomenon that threatens lives in coastal flats, beaches and mountain spillways ranging in location from Ireland to Alaska.

In the north of England, the Arnside Coastguard is well used to quicksand. Every year they carry out around 50 rescues from the treacherous, moving sands around Morecambe Bay. At low tide, the vast estuary is transformed into a wet desert. An official guide is employed to show people how to access the sands safely and to warn them against the dangers of quicksand.

Witness actual footage and dramatic re-creations of successful and tragically failed rescues. Learn life-saving survival tips when you are knee-deep and sinking fast.

The ingredients of quicksand are simple: sand and water. Put them together under the right conditions and it can be a recipe for disaster.
This program profiles individuals who have come face-to-face with this strange and potentially deadly force of nature, including those like Terry Howlett who survived close encounters with the ‘sucking sand’.

The film will also debunk myths surrounding the phenomena, demonstrate how people can make their very own quicksand pits at home and teach viewers how to avoid any undesirable quicksand encounters.
