“Hyenas are intelligent animals that are full of surprises and this film shares these surprises so that you’ll understand these powerful animals better”

This documentary is part of a series that takes the viewer inside the family life of wild animal species to observe the relationships, habits, duties, and benefits of each family member.

In this film, a Spotted Hyena family goes about its tasks of securing food, shelter, and offspring. The alpha member of the pack is the female, who leads the way in hunting, mating, and migrating.

Outstanding wildlife photography shows the highly socialised Hyena community at work, rest, and play. The viewer is put right into the natural habitat of these fearless hunters, the Serengeti National Park in Tanzania.

Vicious, evil, wicked, fearful beasts is often what people call Hyenas. They look odd and are thought of as scavengers, eating leftovers from another animals’ catch, so they’re disliked. This is not true and is not fair to hyenas.

Families In the Wild: Hyenas tells the Hyenas’ true story. You’ll see why Lions are the kings of the jungle and Hyenas are the queens!

This documentary shows:

  • a large, extended family clan of Hyenas with young pups living in a big den site
  • who rules the hyena clan; it’s not who you’d expect!
  • how Hyenas attack a herd of Wildebeest in a vicious battle
  • why Hyenas need to have a cast-iron stomach
  • although Hyenas have no fear of the much bigger Wildebeest, they are scared of some animals…
  • Hyenas kill more of their own prey than Lions do and they have stronger jaws than Lions
  • Hyenas are very good hunters whose specialty is the surprise attack
  • the very important role that genitals play in Hyena society
  • close-up footage of feeding, mating and competing for food

Please note: this is an older production, with colours not as vivid as some other, more modern documentaries, but this is made up for by being very informative, with lots of facts and interesting footage.
WARNING: contains graphic, real animal violence, gore and blood that may not be suitable for young children.
