“These ships are the oldest vessels ever discovered in the deep sea and were most likely lost in a violent storm around 750 BC, during the time of Homer”

Experience amazing adventures on the high seas, as National Geographic goes in search of history’s greatest shipwrecks in this special collection of the most celebrated under-sea expeditions with Dr Robert Ballard - famed discoverer of the Titanic.

Dive with renowned undersea scientist/cinematographer Dr Robert Ballard as he explores the bottom of the Mediterranean in search of clues to the region’s nautical past. Entombed in the rich, preservative soil at the sea’s bottom are millennia-old ships. Watch as Ballard and his team of dedicated, adventurous archaeologists delve into the past as they examine the remains of the wrecked vessels - some dating back to the time of Christ.

Dr Robert Ballard searches the waters off the coast of the Holy Land for clues to the mysterious Sea People who disappeared in the waves of history. He discovered two shipwrecks believed to be the oldest ever found in deep sea, most likely to be used as cargo vessels by the Phoenicians, probably sailing from the port of Tyre along the costs of Israel and North Africa to Egypt, Carthage and beyond.
With further exploration of the ancient port city of Ashkelon, Ballard hopes to solve the mystery of the Sea People, who eventually fell to King David and disappeared completely by 700 BC.

The Phoenicians were a seagoing people who populated the coast of the Levant from about 1200 B.C. to 146 B.C. These well-preserved shipwrecks open a new chapter in the archaeology and history of Phoenician shipping and seafaring. They reveal the deep-sea routes the Phoenicians sailed in the eastern Mediterranean, the size and types of cargoes they carried, the ports they visited, and their trading partners. For the first time, it is possible to evaluate how accurate ancient artistic renditions and literary accounts of these ancient mariners really are.

Reference to their sea faring skills and the construction of their ships has been recorded in the book of Ezekiel in the Bible:
“The word of the LORD came again unto me, saying, Now, thou son of man, take up a lamentation for Tyrus; And say unto Tyrus, O thou that art situate at the entry of the sea, which art a merchant of the people for many isles, Thus saith the Lord GOD; O Tyrus, thou hast said, I am of perfect beauty. Thy borders are in the midst of the seas, thy builders have perfected thy beauty. They have made all thy ship boards of fir trees of Senir: they have taken cedars from Lebanon to make masts for thee. Of the oaks of Bashan have they made thine oars; the company of the Ashurites have made thy benches of ivory, brought out of the isles of Chittim. Fine linen with broidered work from Egypt was that which thou spreadest forth to be thy sail; blue and purple from the isles of Elishah was that which covered thee. The inhabitants of Zidon and Arvad were thy mariners: thy wise men, O Tyrus, that were in thee, were thy pilots. The ancients of Gebal and the wise men thereof were in thee thy calkers: all the ships of the sea with their mariners were in thee to occupy thy merchandise.” (Ezekiel 27:1-9 av)
