“Witness the incredible journey of a land iguana into the crater of an active volcano to lay her eggs”

This spectacular, award-winning natural history National Geographic ‘Special’ tells the story of the incredible struggle for survival of the dragons of the Galapagos archipelago.

Zoe, a fearless little girl, marches by iguanas in the Galapagos Islands, about 600 miles west of Ecuador. When she arrived there with her parents, Australian filmmakers David Parer and Elizabeth Parer-Cook, Zoe was still in nappies. “She learned to swim with sea lions and saw them being born,” recalls Elizabeth.
Her parents David and Liz followed and studied the iguanas of the Galapagos on land and in the sea. In this film we examine the lives of these distinctive and unusual lizards as they bask on land or dive beneath the waves to feed.

The lives of these giant lizards, called land iguanas, are intimately linked with the archipelago’s most active volcano on the island of Fernania. This is the only place where iguanas - fascinating prehistoric reptiles - swarm both land and sea. Witness the incredible journey of a land iguana compelled to climb into the crater of an active volcano to lay her eggs.

Dive in the rough Pacific Ocean with marine iguanas foraging for food - along with hungry pelicans, penguins, and dolphins. They must evade a cast of predators as stealthy as the Galapagos snake and as swift as the Galapagos hawk.

These volcanic islands showcase creatures and behaviours seen nowhere else on Earth. Marvel at the unique strategies for survival that could only have been created in the Galapagos.

Narrated by Sir David Attenborough, in his inimitable and authoritative style.
