“These baby-faced bandits were introduced to Russia from Japan and have slowly colonised most of Europe, where they thrive and continue to spread and infiltrate the natural lines of defence”

Meet the Alien Invasion… Raccoon dogs are not, despite their appearance, related to raccoons, but they are canids, members of the dog family and closely related to foxes.
They are about the size of a terrier, less than a metre long and a mere 18cm at the shoulder, characterised by the black bandit mask across their eyes.

The raccoon dog (Nyctereutes procyonoides) is not an indigenous species in Europe. Russians introduced the species into European parts of the former Soviet Union between 1929 and 1955.
Initially kept for of its valuable pelt and fur production, animals were later set loose as a sport hunting target and the population increased rapidly.

The greatest success of the raccoon dog is to colonise, and through its adaptability it is slowly taking over the world. They have already made their way from Japan, where they hold a cult-like status, to most European countries.

By the 1960’s raccoon dogs invaded Finland and since that time the population has increased at such rate that current harvest is around 130,000 animals a year.
The distribution of raccoon dogs is reaching France, Belgium, the Netherlands, Denmark and recently Sweden, where a program is started to prevent the raccoon dog invasion to Swedish nature.

Join us as we find out how Russia, Europe and Japan have all been colonised by the Raccoon Dogs - Alien Invasion!
