“South Africa’s Sardine Run: one of the most spectacular marine wildlife events in the world”

The sardine run is a giant buffet for predatory game fish, sharks, dolphins and whales as well as seals, birds (gannets, cormorants and gulls) and humans. Millions of sardines swim along the Natal south coast and east coast of South Africa pursued by thousands of predators, all competing for nature’s bounty.

Inadvertently, the various predators start to act co-operatively. Copper sharks and common dolphins team up, herding the shoals close to the surface, making it easier for the seabirds to plunge in and take their share. From the air and sea the hunt is on!

Meanwhile, every fisherman on the South Coast of Africa also races to exploit the generosity of this vast ocean, having waited all year for this bonanza. As the sardines head up the coast the action intensifies, as humans join in the attack.

As the nets are hauled up on the beach, the frenzy continues with onlookers grabbing handfuls, stuffing fish in bags and pockets. Etiquette is forgotten and fights break out as people grapple with each other to seize as many fish as possible.
Some 200,000 tonnes of sardines are fished yearly along the Western Cape coast of Southern Africa.

The sensational underwater footage of The Greatest Shoal on Earth reveals one of the most incredible spectacles of the planet’s oceans.

This DVD is accompanied by a beautifully illustrated 24-page hardback reference book. Watch the close-up wildlife film and at the same time read the book to learn about habitats, diet, life cycle and more. The book is packed with intriguing facts, illustrations, photography and a 'Test your knowledge' quiz.
