The Secret World of Sharks and Rays
For all their Hollywood-bred notoriety, sharks have been deeply mysterious, almost unknowable creatures - until now.
This compelling program goes below the surface to probe the long secret world of these sleek and sneaky predators.
You'll discover the fearsome Great White shark is not alone - that there are more than 370 other shark species streaming through the oceans, including one that can grow to more than 50 feet long (whale shark), one whose snout is long and teeth are sharp and spiked (saw shark), and one that hides in the sandy ocean bottom to surprise its prey (angel shark).
While following their daily life-and-death rituals, you also encounter their close cousins, the rays, whose odd, flying-saucer shape makes them seem much less imposing than sharks. Indeed, the most intimidating ray, the stingray, is just seafood to cousin shark - dramatically demonstrating that, in this unforgiving underworld, blood is no thicker than water.

White Shark / Red Triangle
They call it the red triangle, and with bloody good reason: many great white sharks prowl and probe here.
But why do they choose these specific waters - the coastal area between San Francisco and Monterey - to practice their vaunted kill skills?
This intrepid program follows sharks as they hunt their favourite comfort food, the blubbery elephant seal, who comes to this area every year by the tens of thousands. But despite their seemingly slow and awkward manner, the seals don't easily succumb, and the program captures the interestingly elaborate game of pursuit and retreat that sharks must play to win their prize.
Occasionally, hungry sharks have to resort to other food, such as baby whales, and sometimes humans inadvertently get in their way - with frightening results.
It's all part of life - and death - in the red triangle.
Narrated by Burt Pence
Co-produced by BBC and Thirteen/WNET (2003).
