“Their every picture tells a story about America’s natural treasures”
Can a picture save a species? National Geographic takes us on a zigzag road trip across the USA in this unique documentary to find out.
We follow photographers Susan Middleton and David Liittschwager, who gave up their earlier pursuits (museum and fashion photography respectively) to capture on film the rarest fauna and flora of the North American continent.
In a race against the clock, they capture powerful portraits of America’s most threatened creatures. See the Endangered Species Act in action!
Join them on this unforgettable adventure that takes them from the California Sierra to the deep South, from the woods of North Carolina to the Pacific’s shores. Here they:
- encounter a camera-shy, black-footed ferret in Wyoming
- capture the beauty of Golden Trout in the Little Kern River in the High Sierra
- visit Manatee pools in Florida
- help release a pair of Red Wolves back to the wild
- photograph the only remaining specimens of the Ivory Billed Woodpecker
- watch from a front-row seat as a Bald Eagle chick is returned to its cliff side nest (and accepted by its parents!)
- follow a conservation officer in downtown LA saving and propagating individual Palos Verdes Blue Butterflies
- visit the Presidio in San Francisco where they see the Manzanita, a plant that is so rare, only one exists and its exact location is a government secret.
The portraiture is vibrant and truly stunning and the film is interspersed with interview clips of scientific luminaries such as Harvard’s Edward O. Wilson.
Despite a subject matter that is necessarily depressing, America’s Endangered Species: Don’t Say Goodbye outlines a few recovery success stories and highlights the efforts of individuals throughout the US who are determined to make sure that these species are around for future generations of National Geographic fans.
Music by Mark Adler. Narration by James Wood.
