“Considered the most dangerous snake in North America, it has long fangs and big venom glands, but it is loath to strike or bite unless provoked”
National Geographic film about the natural history of the world’s largest rattlesnake, North America’s most spectacular predator, and America’s most dangerous snake: the Eastern Diamondback Rattlesnake.
We slide into secret cracks and crevices to take a peek at a reptilian master of deception. Protected by a chain-mail suit of protective armour, the rattlesnake will lie motionless for hours and only nearby motion will stir it from its comatose state.
This documentary slides into some unusual places to take a peek at the legendary Eastern Diamondback.
Some experts regard rattlesnakes as the kings of the snake world. Rattlesnakes’ ability to deliver a lethal dose of venom, their heat-sensing pits that allow them to track prey in the dark, and their warning rattle set them apart from other species.
Our guide to the world of the Eastern Diamondback is Bruce Means, a master herpetologist and rattlesnake expert who has survived two attacks from his favourite subject.
Means sheds light on these snakes’ unexpected behaviours - despite their fierce reputation, Eastern Diamondbacks share burrows with tortoises and other animals - and lays to rest some of the myths that have long surrounded them.
The documentary reveals that the Eastern Diamondback is as American as the Bald Eagle, yet it is poorly known and misunderstood. The Eastern Diamondback is a docile snake, loath to strike or bite unless provoked.
The documentary tells the results of Bruce Means’ 35 years of research on the natural history of the Eastern Diamondback, including a life-threatening envenomation he received while on a remote barrier island by himself. Most of the footage was filmed within 30 miles of Tallahassee, Florida.
