“They hunt as a pack, taking down their prey with deadly precision. They live as a family, sharing the work and play of parenting. They defend as a team, warning of danger that can lurk nearby.”
Of the large predators of Africa, few have been so maligned or misunderstood as the wild dog. The wolf and dingo may have earned their reputations as wanton, vicious killers, but the wild dogs of the Okavango may be the least understood animal in Africa.
They walk the plains in packs. They are the most nurturing of creatures, family animals, complex, intelligent, and deeply protective of their young. And yet, they have been called murderous, evil, and a blot upon the African landscape.
These are Botswana’s remarkable wild dogs. Once, they ranged all across Southern Africa. But today they are making their last stand in a few wild places, including an extraordinary sanctuary known as the Okavango Delta, one of the last truly wild places on earth.
In the heart of this world lives a nearly matchless array of creatures. Here, together with other predators like the hyena and the crocodile, one of the Delta's packs has found a home. The other creatures include vultures, lions, impala, jackals, zebras, warthogs and cape buffalo.
This is their story... the story of the wild dogs of the Okavango.
Filmed by Tim Liversedge, a world renowned wildlife cameraman with over 35 years experience in the Okavango region.
