“The reintroduction of wild wolves into the fragile ecosystem of Yellowstone National Park was both controversial and risky, but the wolf has thrived and has established itself once again as the top predator”
A two-part documentary which looks at how a wild creature was totally removed, at great cost, in the 19th Century, only to be reintroduced a century later, in what was then the world’s largest wildlife restoration programme.
Part 1 documents the wolves' journey, from their capture in Canada, to their eventual release in Yellowstone National Park and Idaho.
We look at the history of the wolf in Yellowstone, the extermination programme and the resulting uncontrolled growth of the elk herds. Then Wildlife follows the Crystal Bench Pack and examines its impact on other species in the Park, as they begin life in their new home.
In Part 2 the documentary continues as Wildlife follows the success of the various packs. The Rose Creek Pack is shown on the hunt, interacting with each other, and killing the former top of the Yellowstone food chain, the coyote.
Discover how balance is finally being restored to one of the world's greatest natural areas. Learn how some wolves have transferred between packs and see footage of the first litter of pups born after the reintroduction.
This documentary is part of the award-winning ‘Wildlife’ series, a television series which set a new standard for wildlife documentaries during the late 1990s. (Wildlife has been released on DVD around the globe and is also known as ‘Animal World’ or ‘Safari’ in certain countries)
Wildlife is hosted by naturalist John Ross, who devoted his life to exploring the natural world and documenting its secret treasures. As a wildlife expert, he provides a unique insider's look into the lives and behaviours of animals in the untamed reaches of the planet.
